Mason's vocals are embellished with harmonies from
Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear and Delaney & Bonnie" (Rev-Ola) CD £8.99

GAYLE McCORMICK – Gayle McCormick 1971 solo album from the former singer with (A Group Called) Smith, the band whose rendition of 'The Weight' appeared on the 'Easy Rider' soundtrack album (though The Band's original version was used in the actual film). Previously best known for their U.S. hit cover of the Shirelles' single 'Baby It's You' (arranged by Del Shannon, no less), this soulful side was maintained here with Gayle's renditions of 'You Really Got A Hold On Me' (coincidentally, as with 'Baby It's You', also having been recorded by the Beatles), '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman' (the Carole King composition forever associated with Aretha Franklin) and the Northern Soul styled opener 'It's A Crying Shame' , as well as on a cut of Leon Russell's classic 'Superstar', slightly over-enthusiastically described by Rev-Ola as “possibly the best ever version, and you know how good that means!” (our own stance is that it beats Rita Coolidge's live take from 'Mad Dogs And Englishmen' and removes the over-glossy sheen of Karen Carpenter's performance, but none can touch the perfection of Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett's magnificent recording). However we fully agree with the label's recommendation of Gayle's album as “a must for all fans of Evie Sands, Dusty Springfield and soulful femme pop of all sorts!” (Rev-Ola) CD £8.99
